Student Residence Blijde Inkomststraat
Kwalis | Leuven
The student residence on Blijde Inkomststraat in Leuven is conceived as a carefully balanced intervention within the urban continuum. Areal Architecten reinterpret the street’s neoclassical rhythm through a contemporary composition in which the listed house at no. 116 is preserved and seamlessly woven into a new mansard-roofed volume—an architectural gesture that introduces a touch of Parisian elegance into the Leuven streetscape. By deliberately engaging with the rear building line, the design achieves a precise urban alignment with its neighbours, unlocking the site’s full spatial potential. The façade, executed in white brick and light grey architectural concrete, imparts a restrained monumentality to the ensemble. A central passageway organizes access to the unsealed inner courtyard and leads to the bicycle storage, while a compact underground car park accommodates eight vehicles. Inside, a rational yet generous programme of 44 rooms unfolds, where light-filled circulation zones and shared kitchens structure a serene residential environment.
